Installation options

For most users, start with the recommended terminal install. Use this page for another environment or a source checkout.

Claude Code marketplace

  1. Add the marketplace and install the plugin in Claude Code:

    /plugin marketplace add ProjectAJ14/eklavya
    /plugin install eklavya@eklavya
  2. Restart Claude Code. The new session loads the plugin and starts a background runtime download if needed.

  3. Run guided setup:

    /eklavya:setup

If the runtime is still downloading, complete it from a terminal:

    Terminal window
    npx eklavya install

Then restart Claude Code and retry setup.

The marketplace installs plugin files. The terminal installer also prepares the runtime and the two user chat skills. Running it over a marketplace install is supported: it updates a clean plugin checkout without overwriting local changes. Questions need the runtime; allow its installation to finish before expecting them in a new session.

Claude Desktop and Cowork

To install in Cowork:

  1. Open Customize → Plugins in Claude Desktop.
  2. Choose Add marketplace and enter ProjectAJ14/eklavya.
  3. Find Eklavya, select Install, then run /eklavya:setup.

Surfaces that can access the same local runtime and home directory share ~/.eklavya/knowledge.db; sandboxed environments may not share that storage. Cowork keeps its own plugin list, so the Claude Code installer and eklavya doctor cannot register or verify that copy.

The experimental quiz side panel (quiz.panel) is a Claude Code panel that ships with the plugin. It has been tested on the Claude Code terminal CLI, version 2.1.292. Only the terminal CLI is enabled; any other surface, including the Desktop Code tab and Cowork, keeps the question card. Setting quiz.panel to false returns to the card.

Cowork has these differences:

  • The commit gate has nothing to block because Cowork does not commit.
  • Delegated subagents are not instructed to log concepts because Cowork does not fire the SubagentStart event.
  • Questions begin with [Eklavya]; there is no terminal header or status bar. The Code tab also uses this question attribution.

An administrator can disable local MCP servers or require a full-VM sandbox, which prevents access to the local runtime. See Troubleshooting.

Upload a plugin package to Cowork

From an Eklavya source checkout, create a package:

Terminal window
zip -r eklavya.plugin .

Upload it through the same Plugins page. Prefer the marketplace route when you want plugin updates.

Without a global command

Terminal window
npx eklavya install

This performs the same setup but does not put eklavya on your PATH. Continue using npx eklavya doctor, npx eklavya dashboard, and other CLI commands, or add the global command later:

Terminal window
npm install -g eklavya

From a source checkout

Use this when developing Eklavya:

Terminal window
git clone https://github.com/ProjectAJ14/eklavya.git
cd eklavya/mcp
npm install
npm run build
cd ..
claude --plugin-dir "$(pwd)"

Approve the better-sqlite3 build script if npm asks. --plugin-dir supplies the plugin root required by the server; loading the repository’s .mcp.json as ordinary project configuration does not. The launcher prefers the local mcp/dist/ build, so rebuild after source changes and restart the session. See CONTRIBUTING.md for development checks.
